2014 - Tracks Auction Info

An unreleased recording of a performance given by The Beatles at the A.B.C. Theatre on 16th October 1964.  The recording consists of the following ten songs: Twist and Shout, Money, Can’t Buy Me Love, Things We Said Today, I’m Happy Just to Dance With You, I Should Have Known Better, If I Fell, I Wanna Be Your Man, A Hard Day’s Night and Long Tall Sally

The performance was recorded on a Fi-Cord Fidelity Recording machine on ¼ inch Emitape from the orchestra pit in the theatre by a student from Hull University.  He recalls of the concert, “I was keen to try to record the show and asked a stage hand if I could record it from the wings. He said I would be in the way there but I could stand in the orchestra pit, ‘If I dare’!! When the audience came in I could see what he meant, the two Hull Rugby teams had been engaged to form a semi circle in front of the stage and after the warm up performers had appeared, (they) repeatedly had to tackle girls and boys who wanted to get closer to The Beatles!  During the show I recorded as much as I could, walking from speaker to speaker trying to get a balance of sound.  At one point as I was changing tape, John leant over to ask if I was O.K., as did Paul, a little later”.  Whilst there is audible screaming from the audience running throughout, the recording does capture the excitement of Beatlemania at its peak.  This recording of The Beatles live at the ABC Theatre, Hull not previously surfaced in any form.

The performance was recorded on two 9cm (3 inch) reel tapes which come in their original boxes, total running time is approximately 24 minutes.  Also included in this lot are a CD recording of the tapes, a ticket stub for the concert (2nd performance, Centre Circle) and another stub printed ‘FRONT STALLS’, an account of the day’s events and three black and white photographs taken during the concert, one of John Lennon, one of Paul McCartney and one of Paul and George Harrison, each measuring 13 x 9cm (3 ½ x 5 ¼ inches).  The condition of all items is very good.  The recording is not being sold with copyright.
